The sound quality is not perfect – I have always felt that perhaps it’s missing a little in terms of dynamics – but one can hear all the instruments clearly, so there’s no relevant obstacle to the listener’s enjoyment of the concert. The track list is quite strong, reaching back to the 2 songs from their first single (the iconic ’Killing an Arab’ and the wonderful ’10:15 Saturday Night’), and including songs from all their albums up to ‘The Top’ (which is represented by 2 particularly wild rock songs, ‘Shake Dog Shake’ and ‘Give Me It’). Their recent (by then) pop inclinations are only given voice through the ‘The Walk’ single, otherwise this is a particularly rocking and guitar-driven set, that perhaps culminates in the one-two punch of ‘One Hundred Years’ and ‘A Forest’ (their best 2 songs?). The Cure have always been a very strong live act (despite the fact that its members cannot be called in general virtuosos), and this recording is an impressive proof of that. The line-up during this tour was not a typical one, including bassist Phil Thornalley and drummer Andy Anderson (sadly deceased this week – RIP), but they all give quality performances.
